Day 1 — Tunis, Carthage and Sidi Bou Said
Pick up the car at Tunis-Carthage Airport. Visit the sites of Carthage, then stroll through the blue-and-white lanes of Sidi Bou Said at sunset. Night in Tunis, La Marsa or Gammarth.
Day 2 — Cap Bon
Loop around Cap Bon: Kelibia fortress, the beaches, then Nabeul and its ceramics. Night in Hammamet (about 3 hours' driving in total).
Day 3 — Hammamet, then Sousse
Morning in Hammamet medina, then drive to Sousse (about 1h15). Visit Sousse medina and ribat, evening in Port El Kantaoui.
Day 4 — Monastir and Mahdia
Monastir's ribat and seafront (30 min), then Mahdia (about 1 hour): the Skifa el Kahla gate, Cap Africa and the beaches. Night in Mahdia.
Day 5 — El Jem and Kairouan
The Roman amphitheatre of El Jem (about 45 min), one of the best preserved in the world, then Kairouan (about 1h30): the Great Mosque and the medina. Night in Kairouan.
Day 6 — Dougga
Drive to Dougga (about 2h45), the most complete Roman site in North Africa. Back towards Tunis in the late afternoon (about 1h45).
Day 7 — Tunis and departure
Tunis medina and the Bardo Museum, then return the car at Tunis-Carthage Airport.
Tips for this road trip
- Allow about 900 km in total: a city car or compact is enough unless you are a large group.
- Set off early in summer to visit the sites before the heat.
- Prefer to fly into Enfidha or Monastir? The loop works from those airports too, starting with Sousse.
- To return the car in another town, mention it when booking: a one-way fee may apply.
