For a tourist stay
For a tourist stay, a valid national driving licence is generally accepted, especially if it is written in Latin characters (for example UK, EU or US licences).
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is therefore not always required, but it is still recommended: it makes things easier at a police check or after an accident, because it translates your licence into several languages.
When the IDP becomes essential
- if your national licence is not written in Latin characters;
- if your licence is an old or hard-to-read format;
- if you stay in Tunisia for a long time: beyond a tourist stay, the rules change and a Tunisian licence may be required.
As rules can change, check your situation with the Tunisian embassy or consulate in your country before you travel.
How to get one
The IDP is issued in your country of residence by the licensing authority or an approved body (in the UK, for example, at PayPoint outlets). Processing times vary: apply a few weeks before departure.
Remember: the IDP does not replace your national licence. You must always carry both together.
Documents required by TCAR
- a valid driving licence, held for at least 1 year;
- a passport or national ID card;
- a credit card in the main driver's name, for the deposit;
- an International Driving Permit, if your national licence requires one.
